THE ASIAN TIGER

(Panthera Tigris)

Here is their whole classification:

Kingdom: Animilia

Phylum: Chordate

Class: Mammilia

Order: Carnivoria

Family: Fildea

Genus: Panthera

Species: Tigris

Tigers are a part of the cat family. Their closest relatives are the lion, the leopard, and the jaguar.

The tiger lives in forests, grasslands, savannahs and swamps. It eats semi large animals, including deer, buffalo, and antelope. Male and female tigers do not have any special name, but infant tigers are called cubs. (See more on next page)

WHERE IN THE WORLD?

Tigers live in southeast Asia, mostly in Siberia and Asia. Siberia is -6 degrees (F) in January! Brrrrrr! Siberia only gets to about 64 degrees, probably the hottest day they get all year. In India, it is usually 55 – 88 degrees (F) in January, and in May, when it gets really hot, it may be up to 120 degrees (F)! Tigers can live in many climates.

SAVE THE TIGERS!

Although they are carnivores, the Asian tiger is on the endangered list. Habitat destruction has been killing tigers. We have to save them, or the standard Asian tiger will be at risk of extinction. Who knows what will happen to the food chain?
